David Brooks returned from a lengthy illness and injury absence to feature for AFC Bournemouth during the closing weeks of the 2022/23 season.
He made the first of four substitute appearances at Aston Villa in March 2023 before starting the final two games against Manchester United and Everton.
Brooks spent around 18 months out after being diagnosed with stage 2 Hodgkin lymphoma in October 2021 and then suffering a hamstring injury.
He received the all-clear from cancer in May 2022 and signed a long-term contract extension in August 2022 before sustaining the injury during a run-out for the development squad.
Brooks joined the Cherries from Sheffield United in the summer of 2018 and enjoyed a memorable first season at Vitality Stadium, netting seven times in 30 Premier League games.
An ankle injury suffered in a pre-season friendly at Brentford in July 2019 restricted him to nine appearances during the 2019/20 campaign.
He scored in a 2-1 defeat at Manchester City in July 2020, the club where he progressed through the academy before being released at the age of 16.
Brooks hit six goals and supplied seven assists during 39 appearances in all competitions for the club in 2020/21, the Cherries losing to Brentford in the Championship play-off semi-final.
Upon beating cancer, and recovering from a long-term hamstring injury, Brooks returned to action in the 2022/23 season.
Following a summer of hard work, he started in the opening day of the 2023/24 campaign, playing 75 minutes in a 1-1 draw with West Ham.
In August 2023, Brooks scored his first competitive goal for two years when he struck against Swansea City in the Carabao Cup and he followed up by netting his first Premier League goal in 1144 days, slotting home against Brentford.
Internationally, Cheshire-born Brooks collected the best player award after helping England under-20s win the 2017 Toulon Tournament.
Eligible for Wales through his mother, Brooks was named their player of the year and young player of the year for the 2018/19 season.
He played his part as Wales qualified for the 2020 European Championship and came off the bench during their round of 16 defeat by Denmark in the finals which were delayed until 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
