AFC Bournemouth Women travelled up to Manchester for a pre-season friendly over the weekend, taking on Manchester City’s Development Squad.

Leaving at 6am and returning to Vitality Stadium at 11pm, the squad played at the prestigious Etihad Campus, with all 16 players getting a minimum of 45 minutes in the tank.

Emily Phillips scored the only goal for the Cherries after a lovely team move.

Rosie Eden picked up the ball on the left, cut inside and crossed at the back post for Phillips to volley home.

It was Eden who was also denied one-on-one during the game, with the City ‘keeper saving superbly to deny the 25-year-old.

Following the game, Steve Davies spoke to afcb.co.uk about the experience of playing a Superleague side.

“It was a fantastic opportunity for us to challenge ourselves against a top Superleague side.

“The girls worked hard against quality opposition in preparation for our first competitive game of the season on 2nd September.

“The opportunity to play at the fantastic facilities at the Etihad training campus is one that will benefit our players and was enjoyed by all.”

Meanwhile, in Bournemouth, the Development Squad played their first pre-season match of the campaign, as they hosted Eastbourne Ladies at Canford 3G.

The young squad, which included three players from last season’s under-16 girls making their senior debut, played well and troubled the experienced Eastbourne side.

The game finished 3-3, with Meg Vella scoring a hat-trick, making it five goals in three games for the striker.
