AFC Bournemouth Women kickstarted their 2018/19 season with a rampant display in the SSE Women’s FA Cup.
A 13-0 win away from home against Basingstoke Town Ladies has seen the Cherries progress to the second round of qualifying, with the next opponents yet to be confirmed.
Five goals from Meg Vella, a hat-trick from Chloe Tape and a double from debutant Maisy Smith were undoubtedly highlights, whilst Rosie Eden and Keeley Fitzgerald also found the net alongside an own goal.
A dominant start saw the Cherries 3-0 up inside ten minutes, with Vella, Tape and Eden providing the goods.
Following an own goal, a 30-yard screamer from Keeley Fitzgerald added a fifth with just 20 minutes gone, her effort flying into the top corner.
Vella and Smith soon added to the tally, before a double from Tape rounded off the half as the Cherries went in 9-0 to the good.
During the second half, Steve Davies’ side continued where they left off, with Vella and Tape at it again.
However, with five minutes to go and with the Cherries having made all three changes, Fitzgerald landed awkwardly and was forced off with injury.
Despite playing the closing stages with ten players, Vella rounded off an excellent afternoon with two more goals as the side saw out the game as 13-0 winners.
Following the game, manager Davies spoke to afcb.co.uk about the win.
“It was a very good start to the season,” he began.
“We are delighted to progressed to the next round of the FA Cup.”
AFC Bournemouth Women are back in action next weekend for their first league game of the season, as they travel to Ascot Town in the Southern Region Women’s Premier League.
