U21s progress in Central League Cup

AFC Bournemouth AFC Bournemouth

AFC Bournemouth have progressed in the Central League Cup, with a 2-0 victory over Southend United.

Second half goals from Alex Dobre and Keelan O’Connell secured the win for Shaun Cooper’s side, who will now play in the area semi-final of the competition.

The hosts started the game brightly, with Cherries ‘keeper Callum Ward called into action early on after Isaac Hutchinson hit a well-struck shot.

Moments later, Norman Wabo fired his effort over for Southend, before Hutchinson once again tested Ward.

However, the visitors came out in the second half and broke the deadlock 56 minutes in.

Dobre raced onto O’Connell’s through-ball, finding the target with a strong shot which was converted via the underside of the crossbar.

Two minutes later and O’Connell had a goal for himself, as the Cherries doubled their lead. The youngster fired home the rebound to his own shot, after Southend ‘keeper Nathan Bishop had initially saved well.

The Blues almost had a route back into the game when Wabo saw his header saved by Ward, but Cooper’s side held on to the win and the clean sheet to progress into the next round.
