The Cherries got off to a brilliant start, Callum Wilson continuing his electric form by scoring a header from Ryan Fraser’s free-kick early on.

The pair swapped roles on the 22^nd minute, Wilson putting the ball on a plate for Fraser as Bournemouth looked deadly on the counter-attack.

Huddersfield got one shortly before half-time to signal a nervy second half, but the Cherries held firm and kept the score at 2-1 despite the Terriers’ dominance.

During his post-match press conference, the Bournemouth manager spoke about the following points.

A hard-earned win

It’s a big relief to get the win. We anticipated it would be a very tough game. Huddersfield play a good brand of football and press very well. We got the dream start and looked in total control, but they threw caution to the wind, put a lot of bodies forward ahead of the ball and played very well so credit to them for that.

Credit to my players as well for how we responded in the second half and how we managed to contain their aerial bombardment in set-plays and long throws. We dealt with that really well.

We always want the ball and it’s unlike us at home to be without it for long periods. Whether the score-line or our recent run of results affected that I don’t know, but it was uncomfortable and that’s where I credit the players because they didn’t panic, and we managed the second period excellently. Some of our defending was superb and our goalkeeping played a big part in that.

Individual performances

In the first half Asmir Begovic made some really important saves. We gave players too much time around our box which was a worry for us. We looked more compact and solid in the second half. Asmir still had a bit of work to do but there were less clear cut chances.

Callum Wilson’s an excellent finisher and the second goal was trademark from us this season. It was a good move and excellent finish from Ryan Fraser. I was pleased to see our attacking play looking so dangerous early in the game but unfortunately for those players we didn’t have enough of the ball afterwards to sustain any pressure.

Individually, we know we can play a lot better than that and lose games so to win playing way below our level is probably a good sign.

Moving forward

I’ll learn a lot from watching that game back. I can’t wait to do that because it will be revealing and educational for me. We have to focus very quickly on Liverpool, it’s that kind of relentless schedule now where it’s game after game. Let’s try and use this win to give us the confidence to perform well against Liverpool.
