AFC Bournemouth AFC Bournemouth

AFC Bournemouth make their third ever trip to Wembley on Boxing Day with sights set on a first win over Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.

The Cherries' only previous victory over Spurs was in the memorable run to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup in 1957, the hosts then enjoying a 3-1 win over the Lilywhites at Dean Court.

Whether you're heading to the Arch or otherwise, here is some information on Wednesday's match.

Spirits were very much raised in the Cherries camp on Saturday afternoon thanks to a deserved 2-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion at Vitality Stadium.

David Brooks was the star of the show, scoring two goals of outstanding quality - the first from range and the second an inspired flicked header - with 'keeper Asmir Begovic also integral to the win thanks to a string of fine saves to retain his clean sheet, the side's first since the late-October win at Fulham.

It was also a good weekend for Spurs, led by braces from Son Heung-Min and Harry Kane, Mauricio Pochettino's men hit six away at Goodison Park to close within two points of Manchester City, spending Christmas Day third in the Premier League table.

Last time out

Everton 2 - 6 Tottenham Hotspur

A remarkable game on Merseyside, and it was actually the Toffees who struck first through Theo Walcott. However, that lead didn't last long as Son scored his first and before half time Dele Alli and Kane had added strikes of their own to put the visitors in charge.

Christian Eriksen scored a fourth after the restart and Son and Kane completed their braces in an attacking masterclass, though there was a downside for Spurs with Alli forced off after a challenge with Jordan Pickford.

Tottenham team: Lloris, Trippier, Sanchez, Alderweireld, Davies, Winks, Sissoko (Moura 83), Eriksen, Alli (Lamela 45), Kane, Son (Skipp 79)

2018/19 top scorer: Harry Kane (11 goals)

The manager

In May Mauricio Pochettino will mark his fifth anniversary at the helm of Spurs, the third longest reign in the top flight behind only Sean Dyche and our own Eddie Howe.

The Argentine arrived in England with Southampton as largely an unknown having only had Espanyol, the Spanish club he played for twice during his career as a defender, on his managerial CV, but after success with Saints Spurs came calling.

His knack for getting the best out of the players he has at his disposal and producing fast-tempo attacking football has made Pochettino understandably popular in north London, with exciting times expected as the club move to their brand-new stadium at White Hart Lane in the coming months.

Injury news

Home and away fans will await to see the progress of midfielder Alli, with Pochettino commenting that his removal at Everton was merely a precaution.

Certain to miss out at Wembley are Eric Dier, who had his appendix removed recently, and Jan Vertonghen, the defender sidelined with a thigh injury. Victor Wanyama, Serge Aurier and Mousa Dembele are also on the treatment table for Spurs ahead of the game with the Cherries.

The Cherries came out of their Brighton win unscathed, meaning Lewis Cook, Adam Smith, Dan Gosling are currently the men missing from the party travelling to the capital.

Top stats

If he recovers, the Cherries will have to keep a close eye on Alli - Tottenham have never lost in the 36 Premier League games in which he has scored for them.

The visitors at Wembley on Boxing Day will also need to be wary even if they do take the lead as under Pochettino, Spurs have won more games and more points from losing positions than any other side in the Premier League.

The game also offers the Cherries the chance to score their second ever goal at the national stadium, but will anyone follow in the footsteps of John Bailey on Boxing Day?
