Sam Surridge enjoyed an excellent weekend with Oldham Athletic, scoring the opening two goals of a 3-0 win at Grimsby Town.

The striker opened the scoring on the 63rd minute, exploiting a gap in the Mariners’ defence before firing home a powerful left-footed shot across the ‘keeper.

Just two minutes later and Surridge had his second, finishing from a similar position after working an opening in the box.

Jose Baxter added a third in stoppage time to round off a fine afternoon for Surridge and Oldham.

Over in the MLS, it was also a successful weekend for Brad Smith, who played a part in Seattle Sounders’ Cascadia Cup victory.

The competition takes place every year and is contested between Portland Timbers, Vancouver Whitecaps and Smith’s Sounders, all three teams located in the Cascadia region, with the winner simply being the team that has taken the most points from the MLS fixtures against one another.

The Australian played 90 minutes of the weekend’s 2-1 victory over Vancouver Whitecaps, which not only saw the Sounders come away with silverware, but also their ninth straight victory as Raul Ruidiaz scored both goals.

In the Premier League, Harry Arter featured at Stamford Bridge for Cardiff, but was forced off at half time due to illness with his Bluebirds sides 2-1 down. Chelsea went on to win the game 4-1.

Up in Scotland, Emerson Hyndman’s Hibernian hosted Mikael Ndjoli’s Kilmarnock. Hyndman and Hibs came away with the 3-2 win, as the American played 72 minutes. Ndjoli didn’t feature for the visitors.

Elsewhere, Connor Mahoney and Matt Worthington were unused substitutes for Birmingham and Forest Green Rovers respectively, with both sides drawing 1-1.
