Cherries lose in tough Chelsea test

AFC Bournemouth AFC Bournemouth

The Cherries travelled to the Cobham training base of the Category One Blues, but were well beaten after a positive start.

Under-18s manager Alan Connell reported back with afcb.co.uk following the match.

"We came up against one of the best academies in the world and before the game we asked the players what they wanted from the game," he said. "It was an excellent test and the players put in a lot of hard work; for the first 30 minutes we limited them and created the better chances.

"We then conceded three goals just before half time, including a penalty, but even with the goals we weren't ever cut open and had moments where we continued to threaten on the break.

"It was hard for the players as they spent a lot of time out of possession and that meant that our decisions and the quality we showed wasn't always good enough when we won back the ball.

"We could have given ourselves an easier fixture but we want to test ourselves against the best sides.

"We had a good chat about the match after the final whistle and talked about where we could improve - and in the long term this will have been a beneficial experience."

The youth team are next in action on Tuesday, with Wolverhampton Wanderers visiting Canford Arena for an 11am kick-off.
